About the PCL-5

The PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 is the standard self-report measure of PTSD symptoms, twenty questions covering intrusion, avoidance, changes in mood and thinking, and arousal over the past month. It is public domain, from the National Center for PTSD, and best used alongside a therapist who knows your history.

What PCL-5 score suggests PTSD?

A total of 31 to 33 or more is the range the VA treats as probable PTSD, to be confirmed by a clinician’s interview.

How often should the PCL-5 be repeated?

Monthly during treatment is typical; a change of 10 points or more is generally considered clinically meaningful.
